What Is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a skin condition that causes redness on the skin. While it is often related to blushing or flushing sensation, there may also be blemishes on the skin, such as bumps. Although it may impact individuals with fair skin, it can occur on any skin tone or type.
Rosacea most often impacts the nose first. It gradually expands and spreads to the cheeks, and there are some types that may affect the eyes and the area surrounding them. The redness may spread to the back, chest, chin, and forehead.
How Does This Redness Condition Impact Skin?
Rosacea is not a uniform condition. While it is associated with redness of the skin, it presents itself differently for each person, and there are four unique subtypes of the condition. These subtypes are:
Erythematotelangiectatic
– flushing skin, redness, dry skin, visible broken blood vessels, skin sensitivity, burning or stinging sensations
Papulopustular
– acne-like breakouts, oily skin, sensitive skin, raised skin patches, visible broken blood vessels
Phymatous
– thickening skin, enlarged pores, visible broken blood vessels, oily skin, bumpy skin texture
Ocular
– dry or itchy eyes, burning or stinging sensation in eyes, blurry vision, cysts or visible broken blood vessels on eyelids, eyes may water or appear bloodshot, may impact vision
Some of these subtypes are more common than others, and one type may lead to another.
Can This Condition Be Cured?
While this is a chronic skin condition, there is currently no known cure for rosacea. However, you have a variety of options available to help you manage the redness this treatment brings.
This condition may not constantly be present, but there are often flare-ups of redness. Just as each person has unique skin and a unique experience with this condition, there are different triggers that may lead to flare-ups. Avoiding these triggers as much as possible may help you self-regulate your control. Common triggers include:
- Alcohol
- Heat
- Some cosmetic products (hair, skin, makeup, etc.)
- Spicy food
- Stress
- Sunlight
If you are unsure of what your triggers may be, it is important to watch your skin for changes as you try new foods or certain experiences. For example, a food diary may help you discover foods to avoid, and choosing gentle cosmetic products may help prevent flare-ups.
A consultation with our professionals in Santa Rosa Beach can help you better understand rosacea and how you may be able to better manage this condition. In some cases, further treatments may be recommended. Common treatments include topical treatments, laser treatments, or specialized facials.
