BOTOX® AND DYSPORT®
In a survey of Dr. Weiner’s patients (June 2017), 35% reported no pain and 62% report only mild pain during their injections. 64% reported Excellent, 22% Very Good, and 13% Good results from their Botox/Dysport treatments.
What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a purified, protein, used to block nerve impulses and temporarily relax muscles that cause wrinkles. BOTOX® has been available for since 1989 and approved for cosmetic use in 2002. It is approved in over 75 countries for numerous uses. It is the most popular cosmetic procedure in the U.S. and the world.
What is BOTOX® Cosmetic used for?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is primarily used for treatment of wrinkles. Only dynamic wrinkles may be treated with BOTOX® Cosmetic. These are wrinkles that become apparent with active facial movement.
The areas commonly treated with BOTOX® Cosmetic for wrinkles are:
- Glabellar (“frown lines” between the eyes)
- Forehead creases
- Crows Feet (wrinkles around the eyes particularly noticeable when smiling)
- Upper neck banding (“turkey gobble”)
- Lateral mouth frown (corners of the mouth, DAO)
- Brow lifts (to give the eyebrows a more youthful appearance)
- Smokers’ lip lines
- Bunny Lines
- Tightening the Jawline
Describe what a BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment is like.
A BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment consists of a series of injections into the area in which you, the client, wants to relax. Typically the entire procedure will last between 5-10 minutes. The discomfort is minimal, particularly at the Aesthetic Clinique. There will be small bumps at the injection sites which last for at most 15 minutes.
After the procedure, what should I do?
A client should actively move the muscles injected so as to promote absorption of the BOTOX® Cosmetic. The areas injected should not be rubbed, and a hat should not be worn for at least 4 hours. Also strenuous physical activity must be restricted for those first 4 hours as well. No hot tubs or saunas should be used for the first 4 hours.
When will I see the results and how long will they last?
There will be no results seen until 36-48 hours. At that time, you will start to see the effects. In some clients, this can take up to 5 days. Complete results will be apparent in 7-10 days. Results will last for 3-4 months, with most clients getting about 3.5 months of effect. As the BOTOX® Cosmetic wears off, you will gradually see return of the muscle function, and the return of wrinkles. For best results, it is encouraged to get repeat BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments before the prior treatment’s effects are complete worn off.
I have also heard that BOTOX® can be used to control sweating, please explain.
BOTOX® is FDA approved for treating hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating. Typically, clients have tried multiple topical therapies with success. The most common areas treated are underarms and hands. Treatment for the underarms is easily tolerated but hand treatments require a simple nerve block to control discomfort. After one treatment results last about 6 months. With a second treatment, prolonged results for a year or longer can be obtained. Typically, 100 units are required for best results. Dr. Weiner has a technique in which no nerve blocks are given and the procedure is nearly painless.
How about use for migraines or TMJ headaches?
Clients who have headaches, particularly in the forehead, can have marked improvement with BOTOX® injections. Frequently these headaches are the result of excessive tension in the muscles of the forehead and BOTOX® relaxes these muscles. In fact, people with tension from TMJ can benefit from BOTOX® injections as well.
Can Botox be used for slimming the face?
People that have enlarged masseter muscles, usually from bruxism (grinding their teeth), can benefit from injections of Botox. The Botox causes atrophy of this muscle and turns a square shaped face into more of a heart shaped face. This is a gradual process and takes a few treatments. The affects can be long lasting as long as the Botox is kept up. Many Asian women have this problem and have benefited from Botox. Doses range from 15-40 units per side. Be careful who you go to see for this injection because there are many reports on Realself.com of patients having a crooked smile after getting this injection from an inexperienced physician. Dr. Weiner has been injecting the masseter muscle since 1994.
Read our Blog Post: Slimming One’s Facial Appearance with Botox/Dysport
Dysport was approved by the FDA in April 2009 for use in the United States. However, the drug has been safely used in Europe and South America for several years before that. Dysport is a modified version of botulinum toxin A and inhibits facial muscle contractions that over time lead to forehead lines, frown lines and crows feet. Like Botox, Dysport is only approved to be injected into the glabella, or the frown lines, but is used off label for all areas of the face. From a comparison standpoint, the cost of Dysport is about 10-15% less than Botox and lasts about four months with one study showing up to 8 months. In one study, Dysport showed a more rapid onset of action, within 24 hours, whereas Botox can take 2-3 days to start to be effective.
EXCESSIVE SWEATING OF HANDS AND UNDERARMS (HYPERHIDROSIS)
Is excessive underarm sweating interfering with daily activities? Are you afraid to raise your arms in normal situations? Do you hesitate to buy new clothes because they might be ruined by underarm sweat? Do you worry someone will notice your sweat stains?
When excessive underarm sweating gets in the way of your daily activities and antiperspirants haven’t worked, you may be a candidate for BOTOX® treatment.
About 1.3 million Americans have a medical condition named severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis better known to you as excessive underarm sweating.
Excessive underarm sweating is a medical condition that involves overactive sweat glands. Sweat is your body’s temperature regulator. In severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis, sweating significantly exceeds the body’s normal requirements for cooling.
As you probably know, people with the condition do a lot to cope:
- Change clothes frequently
- Put absorbent materials under clothing
- Avoid certain fabrics and styles of clothes
- Seek medical attention and treatment
While people with excessive underarm sweating may choose many different antiperspirants, in many instances those products fail to stop the sweating.
Clothes can be a real issue, because the wrong choice can reveal your excessive underarm sweating condition rather than hide it. Your wardrobe can be very limited. And you may have to purchase new clothing frequently, an added strain on your budget on top of your purchases of extra-strength anti-sweating products.
BOTOX® has been proven to be very effective against hyperhidrosis and is FDA approved for this purpose. Typically, 50 units per underarm or hand is needed for about a 6 month effect. The second treatment will usually last between 9 and 12 months.
Discomfort is minimal for these injections. Dr. Weiner has perfected a technique for the hand injections which require no nerve blocks, and very little of the injection is felt.
MICRO BOTOX/DYSPORT TREATMENT FOR ACNE
Treat recalcitrant acne using Botox and Dysport. The neuromodulators act to prevent release of sebum (oil) from the sebaceous glands. It has been shown that excessive sebum is the cause of acne. Using a near painless microinjector, the neuromodulator is administered in very minute quantities into the dermis. The procedure takes 10 minutes or less and leads to control of acne for 3-6 months. This should always be combined with good topical therapy, and perhaps chemical peels and lasers.
